GPS for car rental: stop arguing about mileage and fines

15 October 2026 · 2 min read

Renting out a car in Georgia pays well while everything goes to plan. Trouble starts when a renter brings the car back with hundreds of extra kilometres, drives to another country or gets a camera fine — and the argument is "word against word". A GPS tracker turns words into data.

In short:

  • exact mileage for every rental;
  • an alert when the car leaves the agreed area;
  • route history with times — evidence for disputes and fines;
  • all cars on one map, even if you only have two.

Mileage and wear

The odometer shows only the total. The tracker history shows where and when the kilometres were driven: city, highway, mountain roads. That helps you charge fairly for extra mileage and plan maintenance.

Zones and night use

Many rental companies limit trips to a region or a country. A geofence sends an alert the moment the car leaves — you call the renter right away instead of finding out a week later. Ignition alerts at night work the same way when the car should be parked.

Camera fines

Georgia has many road cameras, and fines go to the owner. The time and place from the tracker show who had the car under the rental agreement at that moment — the dispute with the renter takes a minute.

If you rent your car through a platform

If your car is listed on TripBox or another car rental platform in Georgia, a tracker is especially useful: you do not meet every renter in person and the car often goes far. Seeing it on the map is the simplest way to sleep well.

Where to start

One tracker per car and one app for all of them. At DriveBox we install trackers for fleets in Batumi; for 5+ cars we quote a separate price. More on choosing a device: how to choose a GPS tracker.

Questions

Is it legal to install a GPS tracker in a rental car?

An owner may fit a tracker to their own car; stating it openly in the rental agreement is good practice.

Does a tracker help with camera fines?

Yes: the tracker history shows the exact time and place of the trip, which confirms who had the car under the agreement.

How many cars do I need for a tracker to pay off?

Even with one car, a single prevented dispute about mileage or a zone exit usually pays for the tracker.
