How to choose a car GPS tracker in 2026

15 October 2026 · 2 min read

A car GPS tracker is a small device with a SIM card that gets its position from satellites and sends it to an app on your phone. A good tracker shows the car on a map in real time, keeps the trip history and alerts you the moment something unusual happens.

In short:

  • for a private car or a rental fleet, a wired tracker hidden under the panel is best;
  • the app and the alerts matter more than the hardware;
  • a subscription is normal: it pays for the mobile connection and the server that stores your history.

Wired, OBD or battery

A wired tracker is connected to the car's power and hidden under the panel. It works all the time, never needs charging, and is hard to find and remove. This is the best option for a private car and for fleets.

An OBD tracker plugs into the diagnostic port in a minute. Convenient, but it is visible and easy to pull out — not good against theft.

A battery tracker can go into a boot or a trailer. Fine for temporary tasks, but it reports less often to save power and needs charging.

What the app must have

  • real-time location;
  • trip history with stops and mileage;
  • geofences: an alert when the car leaves an area you set;
  • speed and ignition alerts;
  • a message if the tracker is disconnected from power;
  • several cars in one account if you have more than one.

If any of this is missing, you will stop opening the app after a month.

Coverage in Georgia

A tracker works over the mobile network, so coverage matters. In cities and on the main highways of Georgia there is signal almost everywhere. In the mountains it can drop — a good tracker stores the route and sends it once the connection is back.

What it costs

Usually you pay twice: once for the device and then for the service, monthly or yearly. The service covers the tracker's mobile connection, the server and the app. "Free forever" trackers almost always lack trip history or support when something breaks.

Installation

Installing a wired tracker takes about an hour. It should be fitted neatly and out of sight, and powered so it does not drain the battery when the car is parked. At DriveBox we install trackers in Batumi, set up the app on your phone and show you how to use it. Rental companies and fleets have separate terms.
